The file folder emoji is one of two very similar emojis. It should not be confused with the open file folder emoji and can largely be identified by its leaves being held only slightly ajar. The folder is usually depicted as being a standard, heavy paper folder and is always empty. Most platforms make their emoji blue or brown, though Apple buck the trend and go with a glossy silver effect. It can be used in conversations about office or college work, or to tell someone sarcastically that you are putting their opinion “on file”. It is also commonly associated with the folder icon on GUI operating systems.
